In Ghana, it has become very popular for people hailing from the Volta Region of Ghana to be called No.9. Although some dislike being addressed as such. the tag No.9 has always been given to ewes wherever they are being found.
Well, a video sighted on social media has a historian explaining the reason behind the name No.9 given to people from the Volta Region as he details the eventualities and scenes that generated the tag “No.9” for ewes.
According to the man, other tribes in Ghana refer to Ewes as No.9 because of two reasons but there is only one that makes the tag very popular according to the history of the Ewes.
The first reason that man gave was that in 1948, Ghana’s colonial masters formed a committee that aimed at demarcating regions in Ghana and the Volta Region happens to be the 9th region on the list when they joined in 1956.
The second explanation behind the No.9 tag which the man claimed was the most popular reason behind the moniker was a lady who emerged from the Volta Region who contested in the first beauty pageant organized by the first president of Ghana Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
The historian narrated that the beautiful Ewe lady by the name of Monica Ablah Amekoafia became the first lady to ever be crowned as Miss Ghana in 1957 at Accra Center. He revealed that Monica had the number 9 tag on her wrist and that generated the popular name “No.9” given to the people of Volta Region.
Well, most people from the Volta Region find the tag No.9 to be an insult to their people, hence get pissed whenever they are being called by that but we hope with this explanation, they would understand the origin of the name “No.9”.
